Frequently Asked Questions

What is difference between a counsellor, psychologist and psychiatrist?

While a counsellor is similar to a psychologist, a psychologist has completed a Masters Degree in Psychology and is able to diagnose mental health challenges. A psychiatrist has completed a specialised medical degree and prescribes medication.

What is the difference between counselling and life coaching?

Counselling tends to focus on the individual’s problems and aims to heal emotional pain, while coaching focuses on the client’s growth and goal attainment in an area in which the client chooses, whether personal or work related.

What do social workers do?

Many people do not know what social workers do. On television social workers tend to feature when a child is at risk and needs protection. Child welfare is just one field of social work. Other fields include mental health and substance abuse, medical and healthcare, and Hospice and palliative care. Social workers can work directly with individuals, families, organisations, communities, and can also be involved in social policy and programme development. When working with individuals, social workers’ duties generally include assessing the individual’s situation, needs, strengths and resources, and providing practical and emotional support accordingly.

Do I need to choose what type of service I want before I book a session?

No, you do not need to choose between counselling, coaching and social work services as all these services have the same hourly rate. In the first session we will discuss your reason and goals for contact and choose a path forward together.

Can I afford counselling, life coaching, or social work services?

If financial difficulties make you question whether you should have counselling, life coaching or social work services, there are some NGOs that offer services at a minimal rate. Money does not have to inhibit your healing and your growth. Please contact me for guidance in this regard.

Are your services covered by medical aid?

I am contracted to medical aids, however, medical aid reimbursement is the client’s responsibility, unless agreed otherwise.

How many sessions will I need?

Depending on your unique needs, you could need anything from 3-12 sessions. Some people see counselling or coaching as a preventative measure in their lives and choose to incorporate it into their lifestyle as one would a personal trainer, chiropractor, or massage therapist. Counselling and coaching speaks to your mental health, which is as important as your physical health.

Can I make an appointment for a family member or friend?

Yes, you can as long as they are willing to receive the service. You can also purchase a voucher and it can be redeemed by anyone within a year of purchase date. Please contact me should you wish to purchase a Gift Voucher for someone.
